Now you may literally eat it. A new restaurant called the Instructables Restaurant, in Amsterdam, has based it’s entire business on open source. We not talking about the systems or computer they use, but the actual food. Based on the ideology of the popular online magazine instructables.com, the restaurant will only cook and serve open source food. Open source food?? Open source or recipes that have been posted online and have been licensed with an open source license.

Open source food is a new concept not quite seen before, however it is sure to be a hit and pave the way for the open source philosophy to filter into other aspects of life. It is interesting to see how the open source concept can be easily applied to anything else besides software.

Following our recent post regarding Ubuntu’s identity overhaul. It seems as though the masses are rejoicing at the ‘dropping of the brown’. For years Ubuntu held a Unique, and often contested, colour space, as no other distribution ever has made so much use of the colour brown. However it is evident from the masses of forum and blog posts that the general Ubuntu user does not appreciate the brown default interface presented by Ubuntu.

The new Ubuntu branding and theming is with out a doubt in tune with the original Ubuntu idea to remain unique in terms of design. The mantra around the new design, as punted by the Self-Appointed Benevolent Dictator for Life; Mark Shuttleworth, is light. This is the first major graphical revamp the Ubuntu operating system has received in its five years of life.

The idea of a major visual refresh in Ubuntu is nothing unexpected, as it was supposed to take place back in 2008 with the long term release of Ubuntu 8.04. The original refresh was to introduce a darker them with bright orange highlights. However that concept was abandoned probably due to concerns that dark default themes should generally be avoided. The new branding is a complete opposite of what was proposed back then, as the new branding is all about light.

The new look of Ubuntu is causing a stir of excitement on the internet is it clear that Ubuntu users and fans seem to be relieved that the much debated brown is to become an aesthetic of Ubuntu’s past

This refresh is in line with Shuttleworths efforts to make Linux beatiful, as he has on many occasions stated that Apple is a revered system for its design excellence, and though Linux might be an incredibly functional system it does lack the aesthetic edge

“I think the great task ahead of us over the next two years is to lift the experience of the Linux desktop from something that is stable and robust and not so pretty, to something which is art. Not emulate, but blow right past Apple in the user experience we deliver to our end users,” says Shuttleworth.

Ubuntu has in recent versions made great strides in terms of usability, most notable with its Software store and notification system, it however has lagged behind with quality theming. The upcoming version of Ubuntu, stated to be released on the 28th of April this year, will with out a doubt impress as unlike any other release it has managed to generate quite a buzz and will include major updates to many parts of the system.

With the ever increasing blight of spam and phishing scams online, handing out your email address is becoming an ever increasing risk. This is where the usefulness of a temporary email service come in hand, as it assigns you a ‘disposable’ email address to use on the internet, where your address may get sold or abused by spammers. There are several temporary email services online, however we have decided to comb through the masses and shortlist a few promising solutions.

Mailinator: requires no sign up which is a plus in convenience, however since there are no account services one should be careful with what this temporary address is used for as it could get your online accounts hijacked. Mailinator does provide an alternate address that is not shown publicly to protect prying eyes from from your real address. mailinator.com

Trashmail.net: Is a temporary email service that forwards incoming mail, that was sent to your temporary address, to your real email address. Therefore keeping your real address private and safe from the spamming lists. Trashmail.net might not have the most aesthetic interface, however it is quite feature packed as it offers a Firefox addon to make the service that much easier and quicker to use. The service allows you to choose the amount of recieved email of your temporary address before it expires, along with a host of other options. trashmail.net

Mailexpire: probably the most popular of the three, allows you to specify the time of expiry as apposed to the amount of messages of the temporary address. mailexpire.com

By implementing the Open Graph API, web developers can make their pages function like native Facebook pages. Allowing Facebook users to become fans of these pages, which will then be displayed on their profile.

According to the Facebook Developers section;

“The Open Graph API will allow any page on the Web to have all the features of a Facebook Page – users will be able to become a Fan of the page, it will show up on that user’s profile and in search results, and that page will be able to publish stories to the stream of its fans.”

Facebook goes on to state that the…

“The Open Graph API will allow any page on the Web to have all the features of a Facebook Page. Once implemented, developers can include a number of Facebook Widgets, like the Fan Box, or leverage any API, which enable the transformation of any Web page so it functions similar to a Facebook Page.

For example, AwesomeTees might decide that strategically they would like to locate their brand identity at www.awesometees.com. AwesomeTees will install the Fan Box widget, which will allow any Facebook user to “Become a Fan” of AwesomeTees, thereby establishing an official connection to AwesomeTees. The user will then have AwesomeTees listed in their list of connections on their profile as Pages are represented today. Additionally, any content that AwesomeTees publishes on AwesomeTees.com will show up in the stream on Facebook like it normally would. And, any time the user searches on Facebook, AwesomeTees will show up in the typeaheads and prominently in search results.”

Currently the Facebook Connect service provides the various links between Facebook and third party websites, however this proposal makes the Friend Connect service obsolete at best. The social network will take a huge leap into the world wide internet base of users should these proposals be implemented, it would also boost the already massive company.

In light of Facebook’s recent controversial privacy blunders many would argue with scepticism and question the final value this may have to users as other issues regarding privacy will most certainly be unleashed.

Why would Facebook want to expand beyond Facebook.com, besides prospect of increasing its 400 million user base? It seems as though that the executives over at Facebook.com have greater plans for Facebook.com than just a social network. It has been speculated that Facebook is in the future looking to launch an online advertising network and offer ecommerce solutions which is speculated to be far more lucrative than the Facebook as a social network model

FNB CEO along with PayPal senior executives are to hold an official press conference with journalists regarding the PayPal FNB deal.

South African consumers until now, have not had proper access to PayPal services as the service has not been fully supported by the South African monetary system. Consumers may now look forward to accessing and participating in more online commerce as access to PayPal will make it easier for international online payments and money transfers to be processed.Details regarding the FNB PayPal partnership will only be revealed on the 25th of March. It will be interesting to see how FNB will structure the PayPal service, will one have to be an FNB account holder to make use of PayPal, or will it interoperate with other South African banks??

It is the basis of my practice and results in images that are simultaneously familiar and strange. I utilize everyday objects and fundamental forces to illustrate experiences of wonder. Each photograph begins with a simple question “How would this look? Is that possible? What would happen if…?” and develops through a sculptural process of experimentation. As I explore the garage and search through the basement to solve these pictures, I find ways to exploit the mysterious qualities of these everyday objects and familiar materials.” explain Caleb.
