A Look At Docky (post “do” divorce)

screenshot1It was recently announced by developers that the popular Gnome-Do and Docky would be divorcing. I for one loved the integration of the Dock and the Do, however the divorce was said not to be a complete separation as the two separate apps with be able to inter operate. For those who are unfamiliar with do and Docky, they are launcher applications for Linux. Gnome Do was a command based launcher similar to quicksilver while Docky was do in a dock form with the abilities to also be a window manager that supports custom docklets to.

An update has been released for the new divorced Docky application, it can be found and installed in one quick swish by using the following terminal command:

  • sudo add-apt-repository ppa:docky-core/ppa
  • sudo apt-get install docky

The new docky comes equipped with an impressive selection of themes and features. The icons and GUI design as always are exceptions, the most good looking dock I have ever used! Sadly however the themes are still not customizable, but that will probably change in the future. There is also an array of new docklets, such as a Gmail docklet, recent documents, disk mounter, CPU monitor and more. There also was also initially a network manager which got me interested, however it has been removed as it was found to be quite buggy, as the developers are still working on it. It will surely return in later realeses as a more stable way to control your connection from the internet.

Docky is a step closer to having a panel-less gnome desktop, as i for one dislike Gnome’s panels. Further more a dock is in my opinion a far more ergonomic way of window management. the future holds bright prospects for this promisingly useful application.
