Firefox with it’s theming and extenibility is an incredibly adaptible and customizable browser. As of version 3 a lot of work has gone into a set of new features, mainly for HTML 5 and CSS 3.

Paul Rouget over at Mozilla Hacks has decided to compile a list of 46 features that many may be unaware of. While this list is mainly aimed at web developers, it will still surely find use among the tech curious crowd. View the full list here

However it exists probably to ensure a semi standardized way of understanding and using the web. However ever so often these conventions are challenged, and while some may fail others will shine as designs of originality, worthy of mention. It’s interesting to note that these designs are pushing the limits of current design capabilities, both in terms of CSS and javascript, however with the upcoming CSS3 and HTML5 standards, it’s a bet that web design and web based interfaces are in for some major improvements. There is a great deal of really well designed. unusual layout sites on the web, however we believe that the seven mentioned bellow deserve highlight as they achieve a positive user experience, outside the confines of convention.

.

Samsung Mobile has put some design beef behind its Jet marketing campaign and created a unique and appealing website that both compliments and spotlights the Jet mobile phone

FMCS has gone for a whopping five column layout. a 3+ column layout is generally rare, however with the upcoming CSS3 capabilities it could become common place

Sursly has defied convention with melding text image and layout into one cohesive design

Jan Sochor Is three column layout site that utilizes all three columns for main content. What’s interesting is the equal sizes and alignment of the columns

Tiny Team has opted for a minimalistic yet attractive design that employs a folder styled navigation

Red Mccombs Media has multi level, navigation site that displays content in a visual map format

In Google’s ongoing efforts to make the web faster and more efficient the company has recently announced a new service called Google DNS. Many are unaware of the DNS system and how it makes the internet operate in the background. When one types in wikipedia.org, you would naturally expect to have Wikipedia’s home page load up, however the process on actually getting to that page is far more complex as your pc will make several DNS lookups using your ISP’s dns service to convert the address of Wikipedia to a numerical IP address and resolve the request to Wikipedia’s servers. DNS (Domain Name System) is like the great big phonebook of the internet which resolves alpha numeric web addresses into numerical IP addresses.

Google’s new DNS service, in direct competition to OpenDNS’s service claims to make the internet experience faster and more secure. Google asserts that it wont store personal and sensitive data of it’s DNS users. To make use of Google DNS, one has to simply alter thier system DNS addresses to point to Google’s servers, by entering 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 as thier IP Address. It’s likely that your system is set to automatically acquire your ISP’s DNS address by using the Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol or DHCP for short. You will obviously have to disable this function to make use of the manually configured Google DNS service.

It’s clear Google is really interested in web usage experience as the Google DNS is thier latest attempt and speeding it up, recently Google aslo proposed a new internet protocol to replace HTTP, dubbed SPDY which was said to be 50% faster than that of the decades old HTTP protocol.

The internet has been a buzz with the recent release of Internet Explorer 8. I find myself peculiarly excited, not that I’m quite the fan of Windows but the fact that IE8 is closer then any previous release of Internet Explorer to be Internet standards compliant. As web designers know very well, the inconvenience of implementing dirty css tricks into their code to create a website that renders properly on a Internet Explorer, a non standards compliant browser.

However sadly Internet Explorer doesn’t yet quite fully support CSS3, a new version of the common cascading stylesheets language. Although it still remains good news that Microsoft has realised the importance of internet standards and made a decision to steer their browser development towards Internet Standard compatibility.

Microsoft’s new browser offering comes equiped with a few new features, such as increased compatibility with mobile devices which is a field Microsoft is keen to target. Unfortunatly there has been no mention of HTML 5 support which will be included in the upcomming release of Firefox 3.5, HTML 5 is a new version of the familiar html language which now includes support for various open source media types, hence removing the need for sluggish flash based video.

The browser war has intensified, we all know our sides, let the best browser win!
