Facebook Plans to Grow Out of Facebook.com

Mark Zuckerberg, the founder of the hugely popular online social network site Facebook.com, recently announced a proposal that will allow Facebook to in essence expand off of facebook.com. By implementing the Open Graph API, web developers can make their pages function like native Facebook pages. Allowing Facebook users to become fans of these pages, which will then be displayed on their profile.

According to the Facebook Developers section;

“The Open Graph API will allow any page on the Web to have all the features of a Facebook Page – users will be able to become a Fan of the page, it will show up on that user’s profile and in search results, and that page will be able to publish stories to the stream of its fans.”

Facebook goes on to state that the…

“The Open Graph API will allow any page on the Web to have all the features of a Facebook Page. Once implemented, developers can include a number of Facebook Widgets, like the Fan Box, or leverage any API, which enable the transformation of any Web page so it functions similar to a Facebook Page.

For example, AwesomeTees might decide that strategically they would like to locate their brand identity at www.awesometees.com. AwesomeTees will install the Fan Box widget, which will allow any Facebook user to “Become a Fan” of AwesomeTees, thereby establishing an official connection to AwesomeTees. The user will then have AwesomeTees listed in their list of connections on their profile as Pages are represented today. Additionally, any content that AwesomeTees publishes on AwesomeTees.com will show up in the stream on Facebook like it normally would. And, any time the user searches on Facebook, AwesomeTees will show up in the typeaheads and prominently in search results.”

Currently the Facebook Connect service provides the various links between Facebook and third party websites, however this proposal makes the Friend Connect service obsolete at best. The social network will take a huge leap into the world wide internet base of users should these proposals be implemented, it would also boost the already massive company.

In light of Facebook’s recent controversial privacy blunders many would argue with scepticism and question the final value this may have to users as other issues regarding privacy will most certainly be unleashed.

Why would Facebook want to expand beyond Facebook.com, besides prospect of increasing its 400 million user base? It seems as though that the executives over at Facebook.com have greater plans for Facebook.com than just a social network. It has been speculated that Facebook is in the future looking to launch an online advertising network and offer ecommerce solutions which is speculated to be far more lucrative than the Facebook as a social network model
